STAGE

6

Develop & Design

During this phase, team members work through the changes that the team decided in Stage 5 were priority revisions, in order to create the final resource. Note that the planning components of Stage 7 can happen while Stage 6 is underway - that is, while the final resource is being built, the team can plan for next steps that can happen after it is complete.  This may be an efficient way to keep forward momentum.

The goal:

Share the final resourcewith the target audience/s and promote its uptake or use in policy or practice.

The participants:

Team Members:

Designer

Optional:

Additional team members as needed

The deliverables:

  • Final  resource

  • As appropriate, any technical manuals, instructions, or user-facing supporting materials

Suggested stage plan

Producing a final resource

The time needed to make changes in response to feedback and produce a final design depends on many factors, including the extent of development of the prototype, the nature of the prioritized revisions, and the scope/scale of the resource.  The team should set goals for completion that are realistic given constraints on resources.

Much like Stage 4, developing and designing does not necessarily require arranging and facilitating team meetings in the same way required of other stages. Once again, there is substantial independent work for those who are making the changes – most likely the designer and any other team member tasked with developing content.

This independent work should be based on:

Facilitator activities

Facilitator activities during this stage can include:

  1. Helping to arrange and facilitate any meetings among team members needed to coordinate product development, e.g. meetings between members working to develop content or meetings with the designer

  2. Supporting team members use of resources and guidelines

  3. Checking in with team contributors about timelines and supports needed to meet goals

  4. Communicating with team members about progress as needed

As with Stage 4, the facilitator may need to navigate any unanticipated changes in capacity or timelines. This may include encouraging team members to be accountable to each other, redistributing work in equitable ways, or finding additional support or resources.

Wrapping up

Before moving on to Stage 7, the facilitator should make sure all members of the team have access to the revised resource for a final review.
